Choosing The Right Wedding Photographer

Your wedding photographer is going to be with you almost all day on the most important day of your life. Hopefully, their product will enable you to relive that day for the rest of your life. There is a wide range of photographic styles and products available and an even wider range of capability on the part of photographers to produce those products.

You owe it to yourself to invest the time to 1) learn to tell good photography from bad, 2) learn the different styles of photography and what products are available, and 3) decide what style you want and what products you want. Here are the top ten factors you should consider:

Compatibility
You should like your photographer. It should be someone you can relax and be yourself around. You will look better in your pictures if you are relaxed. Gender – Do you want a man or a woman with you all day on your wedding day? Female photographers bring a unique perspective to wedding day photography and a female photographer doesn’t have to be excused from the room while you are getting ready.

Style
What styles of photography are available? What is the photographer’s natural style? What styles are they capable of? Look at lots of examples of their work. Critically analyze the photography. Ask them to show you how to tell the difference between good photography and bad.

Before the Wedding
Does the photographer do engagement sessions? Bridal sessions? When? What are the sessions like? What products and services are available from these sessions?

Wedding Day
What is the photographer’s approach on wedding day? When do they show up and why? When do they leave? How many photographs are usually taken? What will they do to make your photography unique?

After the Wedding
How will you view your proofs? How are proofing, album design, approval, and ordering handled? What will your album look like?

Retouching
Ask if they will be doing retouching and ask to see “before” and “after” examples of the photographer’s retouching ability.

Professionalism
Are they an active member of professional organization? Do they seek continuing education? Who have they trained under? Will they give you references to contact? Do they have professional equipment, lights, and backup? Where are they from? Do they know the area? Can they help you with recommendations for other vendors and wedding day itinerary?

Stuffing
Is there an assistant? Is there a second photographer? Who will actually shoot the wedding?

Packages and Pricing
How much are the packages and what is included? Hours of coverage? Albums? Prints? Slideshows? Digital files? What other products and services are available?

Contractual
What are the terms of the contract?
